Concept and planning a locking system
An important note
Taking into consideration that the average service life of a locking system is twelve to fifteen years, the owner can greatly benefit from a good evaluation and optimal planning when ordering a new locking system. Incorrectly planned or poorly chosen systems usually cause a lot of difficulty and stress. And in the worst case, the whole procedure has to be start from scratch - with all the associated costs. For this reason, it is important to take a couple of points into consideration when choosing a locking system.
Evaluating the correct locking system
When selecting the appropriate locking system - and with it, the manufacturer or brand - the focus is often on the product specifications and the reputation of the manufacturer.
The cylinder
is a normed construction component. It is sometimes erroneously referred to as a door lock. The door cylinder is actually the code unit of the lock built into the door, and operates the locking bar when the key is turned. For this reason, the functions of the locking cylinder and the lock itself must be clearly separated when planning locking systems.
Intrusion protection
If intrusion protection is an issue, the area of things to take into consideration shifts to include fittings (hinges, plates) and even the construction of the door itself. One way of satisfying this need is to use VST-certified door components (Swiss Door Manfacturers' Association, Hauptstrasse 68, 5330 Zurzach) which meet that latest security standards.
